Spring 1

Our overarching topic in Spring is 'Disasters'- our English focus text connected to this is 'Floodland' by Marcus Sedgwick, a superb, thought-provoking tale about how, in a not too distant future in devastated eastern England, a girl named Zoe must survive in a post-apocalyptic wasteland whilst trying to find her parents. Writing an informal letter and a persuasive text will be our main writing focuses from this text.

The weather and climate element of disasters will be covered in Geography also, focusing on tsunamis, tornados and cyclones, as well as the geographical reasons why earthquakes and erupting volcanoes occur.

In Maths, the focus is on the order of operations: BIDMAS. Ensuring equations are completed in this order (Brackets, Indices, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction) is an essential part of mathematical knowledge and also leads into our further focus of algebra.

Our Science focus will be on Electricity, progressively building on the knowledge learnt in previous years, whilst in DT, we shall be sewing, learning and then applying a range of sewing skills to produce and then evaluate a product.

What a pleasure it was to welcome Coventry 21-23 Poet Laureate Emilie Lauren Jones to our school! She worked with the children on poetry slams, a fantastic oracy and cultural capital opportunity, focusing on the topic of 'Refuge' as a topic for performance poetry. Some of us will join the regional finals in April of this year- stay tuned!
