A Phonics Journey
Phonics is often a tricky skill for some children to pick up. There are lots of games and apps you can use at home to support your child. ‘Trugs’ has a proven track record supporting children to learn phonics with fun, quick and easy games that progress a child’s phonic understanding in a systematic and sequenced way. Home and parent packs are available to purchase online. Mr Thorne Phonic Flashcards is a cheap app (£1.99) to download, as well as a myths and legends version for all budding knights! Nessy is probably my favourite app to download as children tend to enjoy watching a crazy ‘Hairy’ jumping over the cliffs! Nessy starts with the basics in Hairy Phonics 1, before moving onto consonant diagraphs in 2 and the phonemes (sounds): ar, or, er, ir, ur, a-e, o-e, i-e, o-e, u-e, vowel ‘r’ and magic ‘e’ in Hairy Phonics 3. Hairy Words 1 teaches the 100 sight words and Words 2 teaches the next 100 high frequency sight words. Apps can be downloaded for £2.99 each, although look out for offers as Nessy often have promotions to include all apps for a reduced cost. Flashcards are a brilliant and cheap way to help you child master phonics. Children I taught last term are used to making their own flashcards and I would encourage all dyslexic learners to make their own set to include difficult phonics.
