Reading at home

Children are expected to read to an adult at home daily. Two reading books will sent home on a Friday and collected in and changed on the following Friday. Please indicate that you have read with your child in their reading diary. We will also be reading with the children in school so please send reading books in with your child on a daily basis.

P.E.

Children will be doing P.E. on a Monday and Forest School on a Thursday.  Please ensure P.E. kits are in school on Mondays and that children come dressed appropriately, (school shoes and jumper should still be worn) for Forest School on Thursdays.

Spelling

Please see below for the list of Year One common exception words. These are the words children are expected to be able to read and spell by the end of the year. Please practise these little and often.  We will assess children on their spelling of these words half termly. See below for ideas of how to help your child learn their spellings.

Homework

Children are expected to read daily and practise their spellings.

How to help your child learn their spellings:

Please practise these words regularly with your child. Little and often, in fun and creative ways is the best way to help your child to learn spellings. Some ideas you might like to try are:

  • write the words in different pens (highlighters, felt tips, scented gel pens etc.)
  • make the words out of playdough or pipe cleaners
  • practise finding the words in your reading book using a torch or magnifying glass
  • make flash cards and stick them around the house
  • make the words using natural materials outside, e.g. sticks, stones, leaves
  • use water and a paintbrush or chalks to write the words on the floor outside
  • use a water pistol to spray the words on the wall or fence outside
  • make up mnemonics (rhymes) to help remember the spelling, e.g. snakes and insects dance = said
  • write the words in a tray of sand, glitter or shaving foam
